Borrow, Renew, and Request
Borrow
- Students, faculty, and staff of Notre Dame are able to check out materials from the Hesburgh Libraries with their Irish1Card. Loan periods vary based on material type, location, and borrower status. Learn more about loan periods.
- Everyone is welcome to make on-site use of the Hesburgh Libraries and collections.
- Those who do not have a current, formal relationship with the Notre Dame may be able to obtain a Special Borrower’s card, which provides limited borrowing privileges for items in the circulating collections.
Renew
- Books may be renewed at any of the Hesburgh Libraries or by logging into your library account.
- You may renew an item unless another borrower has requested it, an instructor needs it for reserves, the item has been declared lost, or your borrowing privileges have been suspended. Please return or renew items promptly to avoid fines and fees.
Request
- You may place a request through the library catalog to have a book held for you, including items that are currently unavailable. You will receive an email notice when the book is ready to pick up.
- When a book is recalled from you by another patron, or if an instructor needs it for reserve, the due date for that book will be reset, and you will be asked to return it. The effectiveness of the recall process depends on the prompt return of recalled books. If you do not respond promptly to recall requests, you will be charged fines once the recall due date has passed, and your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the items are returned.
The Hesburgh Libraries are committed to getting the materials you need for your research. There is no charge for any of these services. Beyond searching our catalog and browsing our stacks, your options include:

- Request document delivery through OneSearch, the ND Catalog, or FindText links.
- All Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff can have books pulled from the shelves and held at any of the Hesburgh Libraries locations.

Partner Libraries
Holy Cross College, Saint Mary's College, and Bethel University
Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff may access the collections of our local partner libraries in the following ways:
Request books from the Holy Cross College library through the ND Catalog and have them delivered to Hesburgh Library.
Visit Saint Mary's and Bethel libraries to sign up for borrowing privileges. An active Notre Dame ID card is needed to apply for borrowing privileges.
In addition, Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff may visit the Saint Mary's, Bethel, and Holy Cross libraries to access their electronic resources, but policies and procedures vary by library.
St. Joseph County Public Library
Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, and Holy Cross faculty, staff, and students, who reside on their respective campuses or in an eligible township of St. Joseph County, Indiana, may apply for a St. Joseph County Public Library card at the Hesburgh Library Circulation Desk.
Eligibility for campus community members will be confirmed using our campus database. Please allow up to seven business days for cards to be issued. For more information, contact us at circ@nd.edu.
Purchase Request
We welcome recommendations for items to be purchased. Requests will be routed to the appropriate subject librarian, who may decide to purchase or subscribe to that item. Submit a purchase request.
Return
- Books may be returned to any library on campus.
- Specialty items such as media, equipment, and course reserves materials should be returned to the library where they were checked out.
- Hesburgh Libraries items returned to Kresge Law Library, Saint Mary's College, or Bethel University will get delivered to the correct library, but they will not be checked in and cleared from the borrower’s account until the owning library processes their return.
- The borrower is responsible for any additional fines accrued until the item is checked in at the owning library.
