Document Delivery
Overview
- Submit a request through the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery page or through OneSearch or NDCatalog search results or FindText links.
- Articles, papers, and book chapters will be delivered electronically to faculty, staff, and graduate students (unless delivery in paper format is requested).
- Items not available for Document Delivery include non-paper items (e.g., videocassettes, DVD's, microtext); items from noncirculating collections (e.g., Reference); items with limited or short circulation periods (e.g., Reserve books); and items from Rare Books & Special Collections or the Medieval Institute.
Books
- All Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff can have books pulled from the shelves and held at any of the Hesburgh Libraries locations.
- Patrons are limited to 25 open requests which does not include books already on loan
- Notre Dame faculty and staff may have books delivered to their campus departmental mailboxes. Please note that physical deliveries to campus departments are fulfilled by campus mail Monday through Friday and may take additional days to arrive at your location.
- Students, faculty, and staff at Holy Cross College may request physical material owned by the Hesburgh Libraries.
Articles
- Faculty, staff, and graduate students can have articles from print journals scanned and delivered to their library accounts. When signing in to make an article request, first-time users will be asked to set up their account.
- Undergraduates may request article scanning services for items located in the Library Annex (noted in the catalog record).
Delivery Times
- Delivery to campus departmental mailboxes typically occurs within two to three business days through the campus mail service. Once material is picked up by campus mail, it is no longer in the control of the Libraries.
- Delivery to library branches is handled by Hesburgh Library and typically occurs within one to two business days.
- Delivery to Holy Cross typically occurs within two to four business days. Material is delivered through a third-party vendor. Once material is put into vendor hands, it is no longer in the control of the Libraries.
Notifications
- Campus Departmental Mailbox Delivery: We will email you when the item is en route to your campus departmental mailbox. Library books will be checked out to your account before they leave the library for delivery. It is your responsibility to notify the library if you do not receive a requested item.
- Library Pick Up: You will receive an email when your material has arrived at the pick-up location. Material is held for seven days.
Return
For members of the Notre Dame community, library materials must be returned to Hesburgh Libraries or any of its branch locations and should not be sent through campus mail. It is the patrons responsibility to return all Library materials to any of these locations. The green bags are intended for patron deliveries only and not to be used for returns.

NOTICE CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS:
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a document delivery request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
