Medieval Institute Library

The Medieval Institute Library is located on the 7th Floor of the Hesburgh Library. It contains the Medieval Institute General Collection, located in the open stacks on the 7th Floor, as well as several smaller reference collections held in its various reading rooms. It also contains the Medieval Institute Reference Collection, found in the main reading room in 715 Hesburgh Library.

The Paleography (715Q Hesburgh Library), Astrik L. Gabriel History of Universities (715E), and Ambrosiana Reference (715F) collections are in smaller rooms off the main reading room. The Stavros Niarchos Reading Room for Byzantine and Classical Studies is next door in room 714, and the Near Eastern Reference Collection is housed in 714B, which is adjacent to the Niarchos reading room.

Items from the Medieval Institute General Collection can be checked out for the same period as Hesburgh General Collection materials. Materials in the Medieval Institute Library's Reference Collections do not circulate. Non-circulating collections include: Medieval Reference (715), Byzantine Reference (714), Paleography (715Q), History of Universities (715E), Ambrosiana (715F), and Near Eastern Reference (714B). Students, faculty, others affiliated with the University of Notre Dame, and non-ND visitors have access to these collections to use in the reading rooms.

The librarian for Medieval Studies, Julia Schneider, provides consultations to students, faculty, and researchers in one-on-one, small group, and classroom settings, virtually and in person. Her expertise includes finding and making sense of sources, narrowing a research question, and locating primary source materials. In addition, she provides expert research guidance in Medieval Studies, especially in the fields of theology, liturgical studies, philosophy, and history.
