Byzantine Studies

The Stavros Niarchos Reading Room for Byzantine Studies, located within the Medieval Institute of the Hesburgh Library, provides all necessary resources for the study of the Byzantine Empire and its Classical heritage. These include critical editions of Greek and Latin texts and full reference materials to support all aspects related to the Byzantine World, including the study of philology, numismatics, and epigraphy.

The librarian for Byzantine Studies, Dr. David T. Gura, provides research consultations to students and faculty in one-on-one, small group, or classroom settings. His expertise includes Greek and Latin paleography, codicology, and the commentary traditions of Classical texts.
