J. Douglas Archer 2004 Foik Award Winner

Archer was honored with the 2004 Rev. Paul J. Foik, C.S.C., Award. This award is given annually in recognition of contributions by a library faculty member to library service, to the Notre Dame community, or to the library profession through personal scholarship or involvement in professional associations. The award was presented at the President’s Dinner on May 18, 2004.

The citation reads:

This librarian is respected for his service to Notre Dame and its libraries, and for his involvement and leadership in state and national professional associations. Active in addressing issues such as the optimal and appropriate use of the Internet, and maintaining a balance between freedom of access to information and restrictions on that freedom, he was instrumental in developing and optimizing ALEPH, the user interface of the Libraries' Catalog, and has contributed substantially in many other areas. In addition, he is regarded statewide and nationally as an authority on issues of libraries and intellectual freedom, and has written and spoken widely on Internet filtering, censorship, and the U.S.A. Patriot Act. We are pleased to confer the 2004 Rev. Paul J. Foik, C.S.C., Award upon J. Douglas Archer.
