Copyright and Fair Use
It's important for library patrons to understand and abide by the copyright law of the United States and the policies of the Hesburgh Libraries with regard to the use of protected works.
Copyright represents the Constitutionally protected legal right (title 17, U.S.Code) of an author, artist, composer, or other creator to control the use of their work.
Authors are specifically protected from the duplication, dissemination, modification, or public display of their work by others without their permission. The notable exception to this rule is the Fair Use clause (Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C., § 107), which grants the right to use, under certain conditions, a copyrighted work without permission of the copyright owner.
