Code of Conduct
All Libraries visitors are expected to follow the COVID-19 related policies and requirements established by the University of Notre Dame, as well as any specific guidelines related to safe use of Libraries resources.
Library users should be able to enjoy respectful, non-disruptive, and productive use of library resources and spaces for research and study. In order to promote such an environment, all library users are expected to respect other library users, University staff, the integrity of Hesburgh Libraries resources, and the scholarly mission of the Hesburgh Libraries.
Accordingly, all users of the Libraries will abide by the Libraries' policies and, as applicable, du Lac's community standards.
These responsibilities apply to all Hesburgh Libraries users, including those who contact us by telephone, email, or online chat.
Library users will:
- Observe established service hours.
- Respond to emergencies, alarms, and other situations as instructed by Hesburgh Libraries or University staff.
- Respect the private property of others.
- Respect institutional property and collections, adhering to all use-related policies. Prohibited activities include, but are not limited to:
- Obstructing the use of library resources through theft or deliberate misplacement.
- Defacing or damaging library materials, furniture, equipment, or buildings.
- Behave in a manner that is not disruptive or threatening to others. Prohibited activities include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging in harassing/intimidating behaviors, such as abusive language and/or threats of violence.
- Engaging in sexual activities, including unwanted or inappropriate touching or advances, harassment, or indecent exposure.
- Inappropriately demanding the attention of others, such as by disturbing library users who are studying.
- Soliciting or vending.
- Bringing firearms or other weapons, alcohol, fireworks, and illegal substances into the library.
- Tobacco or vaping products may only be used outdoors at a minimum of 25 feet away from the exterior of the building.
- Leaving children under the age of 14 unsupervised.
- Using wheeled devices such as bicycles, skateboards, and scooters. These restrictions do not apply to ADA devices or medical or other assistive devices, wheeled backpacks, baby strollers, or to devices used in the course of work by staff or contractors.
- Set mobile phones to silent or vibrate in all library study spaces. If you need to take calls, attend meetings, etc., on mobile phones or other technology, please relocate to the Library Concourse or reserve a videoconference or group study room. Please honor requests for relocation to these areas should you inadvertently cause any disruption.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and University policies in your activities and use of the Library and its resources.
If an individual or group is not adhering to Hesburgh Libraries policies, individual users may report concerns, problems, or policy violations to any staff member or to Notre Dame Police Department Security Monitors at (574) 631-6350 or at their service desk on the 1st floor.
Library users found in violation of this code of conduct may be directed to leave the premises and will not be permitted to return to any library facilities for the day or longer at the sole discretion of the University.
Individuals may be reported to Notre Dame Police Department (NDPD). Please see NDPD's policies. Additional disciplinary or legal actions may be taken in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
