William Kevin Cawley Portrait

About

For over 30 years Kevin Cawley has been in charge of the Catholic historical collections in the University Archives -- the collections that are not university records. In order to document the history of the Catholic Church in the United States, since the middle of the nineteenth century the Notre Dame Archives has collected historical material including Catholic personal papers, institutional records, manuscripts, microfilm, printed material, and digital records from Catholic press and publishing, higher education, social action. Our collections represent Catholic clergy, laity, religious orders, the charismatic renewal, the liturgical movement, and the Catholic peace movement.

Cawley has been an active participant in the Catholic Research Resources Alliance and chair of CRRA's Digital Access Committee. He has also served as librarian and curator for Notre Dame's Jacques Maritain Center and has managed the finding aids and websites for both the archives and the Maritain Center. He has served as secretary and president of the Society of Indiana Archivists and has been a member of the Society of American Archivists since 1983. He has presented papers at SAA conferences and at meetings of the American Catholic Historical Society, the Catholic Library Association, the History of Women Religious Conference, and the Holy Cross History Association. For many years he has written a bi-annual column for the newsletter of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism describing new collections in the Notre Dame Archives.

His publications include: Parish History Collection: A Directory of Works at the University of Notre Dame, with Carolyn Mankell Sowinski and Charlotte Ames (Notre Dame, Ind.: University Archives, 1988). "Archives and Manuscripts" in Theodore M. Hesburgh: A Bio-Bibliography, compiled by Charlotte A. Ames (New York: Greenwood, 1989). Guide to Manuscript Collections (Notre Dame, Ind.: University Archives, 1993). "University of Notre Dame Archives" in American Catholic Studies Newsletter 20:1 (Spring, 1993). Catholic Newspapers in Microform: a Directory of Works at Notre Dame, with Charlotte Ames (Notre Dame, Indiana: Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism, 1997). He has also produced a parish history, a novel for children, and several volumes of poetry available from Amazon or Lulu.

Before becoming an archivist, Cawley spent nine years as a college English teacher at John Carroll University, Cornell University, and Vassar College. He has an M.A. from John Carroll University, a Ph.D. from Cornell University, and an M.S.L.S. in archival administration from Case Western Reserve University.
