The Gifts Unit is associated with the Library Advancement Office in the Hesburgh Libraries. The Gifts Unit receives and processes both small and large in-kind gifts of materials donated to the Hesburgh Libraries. In addition to gifts processing, some large collection purchases are also processed by the Gifts Unit staff. Processing materials involves unpacking, sorting, obtaining selection specifications in cooperation with subject area selectors and reference to collection development policies and other processing preferences. Materials are searched against current library holdings and reviewed by subject librarians for appropriateness to the collections. Those materials selected are added to the collections through work with the Cataloging Department staff. Materials requiring preservation review are referred to the Preservation Librarian for assessment. Materials deselected during the review process are redirected appropriately.
