  • Students, faculty, and staff at the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, Holy Cross, or Bethel Colleges may request physical material that is owned by the Hesburgh Libraries through the online catalogs: One Search or Classic Catalog. Requested materials will be available as soon as they can be retrieved from our collections, processed, and sent to preferred pick-up location. When a request is placed on an item that is currently checked out to another customer, a recall will be placed in the name of the requestor and the book will be available as soon as it is returned.

    We are unable to deliver materials that are:
         •non-paper formats (videocassettes, DVD's, microtext, etc.)
         •from non-circulating collections (ex. Reference)
         •limited or have short circulation period (ex. Reserve books)
         •items from Special Collections and Rare Books or the Medieval Insititute

    Scans from Notre Dame held journals, microtext or book chapters may be requested by Notre Dame members only by using this online form. Once processed, the item will be sent to the patron electronically. Saint Mary, Holy Cross and Bethel College patrons must follow their home institution ILL procedures to order reproductions of Hesburgh Library materials.
  • We will:
         •Deliver circulating Hesburgh Libraries material to Notre Dame faculty members' departmental campus mailbox; or any Hesburgh, Saint Mary, Holy Cross, or Bethel College library or library branch.
         •Provide electronic delivery of articles and book chapters (limit one chapter) from the Hesburgh Library collections.
      

    Service timetable:
         •We will process requests Monday through Friday.
         •Articles from the Hesburgh Library collection can usually be delivered electronically by the next business day.
         •For office delivery, physical materials from the library collections will normally be delivered within two (2) to three (3) business days through the campus mail service.
         •For Hesburgh Libraries branch delivery, physical material will normally be delivered within one business day.
         •For Saint Mary, Holy Cross, or Bethel College library pick-up, physical materials from the library collections will normally be delivered within two (2) to four (4) business days for .

    Receiving locations:
         •We will deliver books to the mailroom associated with your department. When placing your request, this option is the default.
          • We do not offer office delivery to Saint Mary, Holy Cross, or Bethel College library faculty. Library pick-up is only option, regardless.
         •We will deliver books to any Hesburgh Libraries service desk (ex. Hesburgh, Chemistry/Physics Library, Business Information Library).
          • We can not deliver to the Kresge Law Library Circulation department. Closest Hesburgh Library to the Kresge Law Library is the Engineering Library.
         •Articles, papers and book chapters will be delivered electronically (and more quickly) unless you specifically request delivery in paper format.
         •Log into "My Account" to confirm your campus address of record. Please contact Human Resources to correct any errors.

    Methods of notification:
         •For office delivery - we will email you when the item is en route to your department mailroom. Library books will be checked out to your library account (a.k.a. My Account) before they leave the library for delivery. It is the patron's responsibility to notify the library when a requested item is not received.

         •For library pick-up - You will receive an email when your material has arrived at the pick-up location. Material is held for seven (7) days.

    Procedures for requesting material:
    The request form is available from a variety of places, depending on what you are searching for.

    For Books:

         •In OneSearch: find the book you would like to have delivered. Click "Recall/Request". When you are asked to "sign-in to place requests", type your ID and passcode as directed by your home institution (Notre Dame, Saint Mary, Holy Cross, or Bethel). After logging in, select the pick-up location for your request. Pick-up location options will be determined by your status and your home institution.
         •In Classic Catalog: find the book you would like to have delivered, Click the location/call number link. Click on the request link in the item list. When you are asked to "sign-in to place requests", type your ID and passcode as directed by your home institution. After logging in, select the pick-up location for your request. Pick-up location options will be determined by your status and your home instititution.

    For Articles:

         •In OneSearch: find the article you would like to have delivered. Click "Request via ILL". When you are asked to "login to Interlibrary Loan Services", type your ID and passcode as directed by your home institution. After logging in, citation information for your rquest will be autofilled. Please review and add any missing information. First time users will be asked to set-up their ILL account.
         •A user that already has the correct citation information can login to ILLiad to request an article using this online form (first time users will have to set-up their account). You will be asked to type in your Notre Dame NetID and passcode. Saint Mary, Holy Cross, and Bethel patrons must use their home institution service and procedures. Click "Journal Article" or "Book Chapter" under New Request. Fill out as much accurate information on your requested item as possible. Incomplete or incorrect citations will result in a request being 'unfilled' and cancelled by library service staff. Click the submit button to when your request is finished.

    Returning Library materials:
    Library materials must be returned to the library and should not be sent through campus mail. Material that is returned through campus mail and is lost is the responsibilty of the patron.

  • We will:

         •Provide electronic delivery of articles and book chapters (limit one chapter) from the Hesburgh Library collections.

    For Articles:

         •Hesburgh Library does not provide article scanning service for undergraduates.

    Library materials can be returned to any Hesburgh Libraries service desk, or Saint Mary, Holy Cross or Bethel College library.
  • NOTICE CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

    • The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

    • This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a document delivery request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
